Hema Negi Karasi - An Introduction

Prologue

An artist par excellence who has selflessly taken Garhwali culture and traditions on to the global stage. Hema is reputed folk singer who hails from a remote village Tukhindain Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Her journey is one of folklore and began when she was introduced to folk music by her mother at a tender age. It is pure passion that has motivated her to stand out among other folk artists by her unique style of singing and performing folk legends in traditional Jaagar form.

Hema was always intrigued by the performance of Jaagar folk singers and wanted to know more about the skill. Jaagar is one such form of religious performance which is a perfect symphony of singing alongwith traditional instruments like Damru and others to invoke deities to come and shower their blessings.

Hema’s professional career has been full of ups and downs as she has ventured audaciously in a male dominated field and proved to be a youth icon she is today. She specializes in Jaagar and traditional Himalayan folk and she is a great supporter and promoter of traditional folk across India.

Hema is a new age performer who understands the importance of digital age and therefore she is extensively leveraging its strengths in increasing awareness among the youth across the globe. She is first female folk artist in Uttarakhand who has own website, YouTube Channel and Music Company which is dedicated towards the promotion of culture. She runs a production house that has been delivering traditional content in the form of folk songs and documentaries.

Her influence on the youth can be fathomed by the fact that her music video Jai Bhola Bhandari has been adopted by the state government for promotion of tourism in Uttarakhand. The latest feather in her cap is Giratoli Gir Genduwa – 2, a mesmerizing musical rendition of the epic victory of Pandavas over Kauravas in the Dharamyudh.

Hema’s skills and contribution has been recognized by Uttarakhand by conferring multiple accolades in the past two decades. In addition, she has been rewarded at the national level and recognized internationally. Many countries have invited her to perform to apprise them of tradition and cultural heritage of the Devbhoomi.

This decade, she believes, is the decade of youth and our country’s demographic landscape indicates that the youth of our state and country have untapped potential which can be channelised into something remarkable. Hema has committed to use the energy of the youth to take our cultural heritage to new heights and is working diligently with talented youth of our hinterland. The objective is to give them a platform to display their skill and take them on the path to commercial success and career growth.

Profession

Hema Negi Karasi got help from her mother during her childhood and sung the  Mangalgeet of Nanda DeviJaagar. She has released many albums and songs so far with her melodious voice along with traditional dance.

She is running a music company named HNK Films Mart firm where she has committed herself to do more for Uttarakhand culture and save the traditional culture. Also she is working on some of new projects where traditional culture would become visible to folk music lovers.

She has been awarded by many societies in India and other countries as well for her performances and her dedication towards Uttarakhand culture.

Uttarakhand traditional culture is very rich culture and she has sung lots of old songs with latest music beats and instruments. Hema Negi Karasi has released 48+ albums and more then 100 songs so far with her sweet voice along with  traditional dance. She has been awarded by many societies in India and other the countries as well for her best performance towards Uttarakhand culture.

Hema is not only impacting the Uttarakhandi residents in India but also the global diaspora by bringing them closer to their culture and reinvigorating their love for their Devbhumi. Her melodious songs picturized in the pristine locations of Uttarakhand coupled with fresh outlook of cultural heritage with  digital boost has worked out successfully in bringing awareness among the people of Uttarakhand. She is a well-recognized personality now who is  synonymous with traditional culture. All her music videos give a soothing view of a Uttarakhand village, people in their traditional attires performing daily chores and their devotion towards the almighty. She depicts the strength gifted to the Garhwali people by the gods residing in Devbhoomi.

She has significantly contributed towards the social and cultural fabric of  Uttarakhand. She has reintroduced the traditional dresses which had lost their identity. Apart from that she has also introduced the following –
Traditional dresses viz. Ghungati, Pakhala, Aangadi, Pagada, Ghagra and Fatoyi etc. Uttarakhandi traditional jewellery such as Nath, Guloband, Hasuli, Dhaguli, Chandra Haar, Ponchhi, Timandya etc. The traditional dress for women in Uttarakhand remains Sarong, a mantle-type dress, tightened with a blouse and an Odani and Khorpi. Whereas in the weddings or special occasion, native women are seen wearing the attractive Rangwali Pichoraor Ghagra Choli. A significantly large nose ring (nath) and necklace called Galob and are also worn by the women during festivals/special occasion. The Rangwali Pichora is the dress worn by married women as it represents  prosperity.

She has been part of digital forums RaasDigitalMart& HNK Films conducting weekly  webinar sonincreasing awareness on various issues like agriculture, water conservation, folk music, folk artists and artisans, skill development, entrepreneurship and employment generation which has created a difference in many lives.
Besides the fact that it has given her visibility, this effort has also motivated many Garhwali youth to take up folk singing and made them cognizant of their culture. It is remarkable to see how a lady has been so motivated to learn constantly and use technology to the hilt. In a digital world it is possible to create a presence but it takes talent and hardwork to be able to achieve what she has.

She has done many stage show to promote traditional culture in India and other countries. Uttarakhand traditional culture is very rich culture and she has sung lots of old songs with latest music beats and instruments. She has been awarded by many societies in India and overseas.
